De Brignac To Ace Of Spades — The Journey through The Years
It was in 1916 that Jean Cattier had to return home from the battlefront after enduring a severe war injury. He came back to Chigny-Les-Roses, where his ancestors had been growing vines since 1625.
The city of Reims was bombarded by the Germans, and the entire area was burnt down to shreds. The Champagne merchants tried to maintain decent activity during the tragic times but failed to find any grapes in the nearby vineyards.
To save his paltry harvest, Jean Cattier decided to produce his own champagne in 1916. The first batch came out as celebratory drinks after the culmination of World War I in 1918. By 1936, the entire Cattier family was handling the business.
In 1951, Cattier was successful in acquiring the Clos du Moulin, one of the rare historical regions of the champagne area where the vineyards were destroyed. He managed to restore a few hectares of the parcel and produced his first wine from the restored units in 1952.
The original ‘de Brignac’ name was chosen and registered by the Cattier family themselves. It was somewhere around “the late 1940s or early 50s”, according to Jean-Jacques Cattier. He said that the name was inspired by a character from a novel his mother had been reading.
After being dormant for decades, the brand returned to the big scene for making champagne after adding ‘Armand’ to the existing name. Hence it became Armand de Brignac.
This was a mandate set by the French industry group Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne (CIVC) to eliminate any confusion with the Northwestern French village of Brignac, located just outside the Champagne region.
At the turn of the 21st century, the Cattier family decided to keep the parcels of reserve wines aside and invest in a new ultra prestige Champagne project. The first bottles of Armand de Brignac Brut Gold came out of the cellars in France in 2006.
In 2011, Alexandre Cattier took over from his father, Jean-Jacques Cattier. It was not for long, though, as in November 2014, Jay Z bought the company and now leads it from the front.
Armand de Brignac became Ace of Spades Champagne because of its fancy logo and recognizable design on the bottles.
Ace Champagne continues to be a hit across countries because of its uniquely-styled opaque metallic bottles and impressively detailed flavor.
